The beginning

The soil was always
the beginning.

Komal Jaiswal did not come to regenerative agriculture through a university programme or a research grant. She came through fifteen years of working directly with soil — watching what happened when it was fed, when it was ignored, when it was treated as a production substrate rather than a living system.

She holds an Honours degree in Economics from JNVU Jodhpur and a postgraduate qualification in Event Management from NIEM Mumbai. Neither of these trained her for what she eventually became. That education happened in the field — in the difference between a soil that smelled of earth and one that smelled of nothing at all.

When she formalised her practice, she chose the most rigorous frameworks available. Her Permaculture Design Certificate from Aranya gave her the ecological design language — how to read land, map water, zone a farm, and design systems that function without constant intervention.

Her Foundation Course from the Soil Food Web — the methodology of Dr. Elaine Ingham — gave her the biological framework. The soil food web: bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, microarthropods — the living community that makes nutrients available, builds structure, and determines whether a plant thrives or merely survives.

These two trainings — ecological design and soil biology — form the intellectual core of everything she does. They are not philosophies. They are methodologies with measurable outcomes.

Alternative education

She built a school
before she built a farm.

While she was learning the land, Komal was also building something else entirely. She founded Caterpillars Lab — the first alternative school in central India, based in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh. A school that asked what education looks like when it begins with curiosity rather than curriculum.

That question — what happens when you work from the root rather than the surface — has followed her into everything she has built since. It is the same question she asks of soil. It is the same question she asks of farming.

Entrepreneurship

Greenaffair did not emerge from a single idea — it was shaped through some of India's most demanding entrepreneurship programmes. Komal trained through WSP Cohort 4, completed programmes at NSRCEL, IIM Bangalore, and participated in initiatives at IIT Mandi and Nexus, UConn University — organised by the American Embassy.

These programmes did not change what she was building. They gave her the tools to build it at scale — the financial rigour, the market thinking, and the institutional relationships that take a practice from a single farm to a movement.

In December 2024, Forbes listed Greenaffair among the 100 Most Promising Start-ups in India — recognition that the model Komal had built at the intersection of soil science and sustainable enterprise had arrived as a serious business, not just a practitioner's passion project.

UAE — International work

Growing food where
food should not grow.

The most internationally significant demonstration of Komal's work is currently underway in the United Arab Emirates — one of the world's most water-stressed environments, where soil is largely arid and rainfall is minimal.

On arid soils in the UAE, she is growing wheat, vegetables, and trees organically. The trees require 8 litres of water annually — not per week, not per month — per year. In a country where water is among the most precious and contested resources, this is not just an agricultural experiment. It is a proof of concept for food production in conditions that climate change is rapidly making more common across the world.

The system works because the soil is alive. Microbial communities that build water-retention capacity, root systems that access moisture at depth, organic matter that holds what little rain falls — these are not miracle technologies. They are the outcomes of understanding soil as a living system rather than an inert growing medium.

Soil Yatra 2025

India's first mobile
soil testing initiative.

In 2025, Komal led Soil Yatra — India's first mobile soil testing initiative. A custom-fitted van, three-level diagnostics, and a team that took soil biology directly to farmers across Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.

The Yatra was flagged off by the Hon. Governor of Punjab and Chandigarh and supported by IISER Mohali, PSCST, and PABI. At each farm, results were explained in the local language. At each stop, the same truth surfaced: farmers understood their soil was suffering. The market gave them no reason to fix it.

At the Hoshiarpur Citrus Estate, Komal was recognised for her work on the Yatra — appreciated by the President of India for her contribution to grassroots agricultural innovation.

Greenaffair is the convergence of everything Komal has built — the soil science, the ecological design, the alternative education, the entrepreneurship, the international fieldwork. It is the answer to a question she has been asking for fifteen years: what happens when you treat soil as the living system it actually is?

The answer, it turns out, is everything. Yields improve. Input costs fall. Water retention increases. Biodiversity returns. Food tastes different. And farmers — who have spent decades in a chemical trap not of their choosing — find a way out that does not require them to gamble their livelihood on an unproven idea.

This is not a belief system. It is a set of practices with measurable outcomes. Komal has measured them — in microbial counts, in Brix readings, in water retention data, in input cost reduction across farm cycles. The data is in the soil.
