Kannauj is a small city in Uttar Pradesh that has held a singular position in the world of fragrance for over 600 years. It supplied the Mughal court. It supplied the maharajas. Its perfumers invented and refined the hydro-distillation technique — the deg-bhapka method — that is still used today. It is to Indian perfumery what Grasse is to French perfumery. And like Grasse, its most important product is not the synthetic replica but the real thing.
This rose water is steam-distilled from fresh mogra blooms in copper vessels using the traditional deg-bhapka method. Mogra — Arabian jasmine — is not what most rose waters use. It is more delicate, more complex, and significantly more difficult to work with than common rose varieties. The distillation produces a true hydrosol — not rose oil dissolved in water, not synthetic rose fragrance added to distilled water, but the actual water-soluble aromatic compounds extracted from the flower by steam.
The result is a product that behaves on skin the way a real botanical should — toning without stripping, hydrating without occluding, and carrying a fragrance that is recognisably floral without being overwhelming. It contains no alcohol, which means it does not dry the skin in the way most commercial toners do. It contains no glycerin, which means it does not sit on the surface.
What it contains is the water-soluble essence of mogra, and nothing else. There is no way to fake this — synthetic rose water smells different, behaves differently, and does different things to the skin. Anyone who has used the real thing will not go back.
